Human settlement and infrastructure in the IGAD nations are crucial for economic development and quality of life but face significant challenges. Rapid urbanization is occurring, particularly in cities like Nairobi and Addis Ababa, leading to the proliferation of informal settlements with inadequate access to clean water, sanitation, and housing. Infrastructure development varies widely across the region, with many areas lacking essential transportation, energy, and communication networks, which hinders trade and economic growth. Basic services, including healthcare and education, are often insufficient, particularly in rural areas, impacting health outcomes and educational opportunities. Regional cooperation is essential for addressing these challenges, with initiatives like the IGAD Infrastructure Master Plan aiming to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable development. Moreover, integrating climate resilience into urban planning and infrastructure projects is vital, given the region’s vulnerability to climate-related disasters. Overall, improving human settlement and infrastructure is critical for fostering inclusive and resilient development across the IGAD region
