The economies of IGAD states are primarily based on agriculture, which employs a large portion of the population but remains vulnerable to climate shocks such as droughts and floods. Countries like Ethiopia and Kenya have seen economic growth through infrastructure and industrial development, but poverty remains widespread, especially in conflict-affected nations like South Sudan and Somalia. The urban-rural divide is stark, with rural populations facing food insecurity, poor infrastructure, and limited access to basic services
Livelihoods in the region are significantly affected by climate change, conflicts, and environmental degradation, particularly for pastoralists and farmers. Many people are forced to migrate for better economic opportunities, with remittances playing a crucial role in supporting families. IGAD’s initiatives, such as the Drought Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI) and regional economic cooperation, aim to address poverty and improve livelihoods by enhancing resilience, promoting sustainable development, and fostering regional integration. However, challenges like ongoing conflict and resource scarcity remain significant barriers to progress.
