Environment and Human rights

Everyone on the planet has a right to a healthy environment. Climate change and environmental degradation remain some of the biggest challenges facing people in the global south. There is a need to step up access to a "clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

Promoting, preserving, and fulfilling human rights and environmental sustainability are complementary goals at the heart of sustainable development. States should address not only environmental degradation but also protect environmental rights defenders at the forefront of protecting and conserving the environment and community resources such as wetlands, forests, air quality, and climate change, among others.

A coordinated response based on shared human rights and environmental principles such as solidarity, accountability, transparency, equity, and justice is needed to address transboundary environmental concerns like climate change, ecosystem management, biodiversity loss and pollution.
