Deforestation

Forests, trees, and woodlands are critical to member states’ national and sustainable development goals, including addressing the climate crisis. The IGAD region had a forest cover of about 40% of the land area. Increased population pressure, urbanisation, environmental degradation, and climate change, among others, reduced the forest cover to about 21% of the total forest area of Africa.

What We Do

  • We work with member states to implement forest policies, environmental regulations, and climate change policies and support efforts toward sustainable management of forest resources.
  • We work with member states to increase forest cover and carbon sinks in line with their mitigation goals.
  • We work with member states to enhance technical and institutional capacities in the forestry sectors.
  • We work with member states and partners to enhance coordination, harmonise forest management strategies and invest in joint research, technology and knowledge management for sustainable forest resources conservation.
