Thematic Area

Human Security & Peace Building

Human security involves three core principles: freedom from fear (protection from violence and conflict), freedom from want (access to basic necessities), and freedom to live in dignity (protection of human rights and justice). Peace building supports these efforts by working towards conflict resolution, rebuilding governance and infrastructure in post-war societies, promoting dialogue between divided communities, and strengthening institutions to ensure long-term stability.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Fragile states with weak institutions often lack the capacity to implement effective peacebuilding programs. Resource scarcity, exacerbated by climate change, can trigger further conflict. Additionally, deep ethnic, religious, and political divisions within societies can make reconciliation efforts difficult. Global and regional organizations, like the United Nations, the African Union, and IGAD, play a vital role in supporting human security and peacebuilding initiatives. Their work helps create stable environments where people are protected from threats, have access to essential services, and can rebuild their lives with dignity, laying the foundation for lasting peace and development.
