Food systems in the IGAD nations—Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda—are primarily agrarian, with a large portion of the population relying on agriculture, pastoralism, and fishing. However, these systems face significant challenges, including low agricultural productivity, vulnerability to climate change, recurring droughts, and conflict, leading to high levels of food insecurity and dependence on humanitarian aid. Efforts to modernize agriculture, improve infrastructure, and build resilience are underway, alongside regional initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation and sustainability. Additionally, the potential of fisheries and the blue economy remains largely untapped in coastal countries, highlighting the need for targeted investment and development in these sectors to improve food security and economic growth across the region.
