Education in IGAD States faces significant challenges and disparities, characterized by varying access and quality across the region, which includes Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. While primary education enrollment has improved, secondary and tertiary education remain less accessible, particularly for marginalized groups, including girls and rural populations. Factors such as poverty, conflict, and inadequate infrastructure hinder educational progress, with a notable shortage of qualified teachers affecting quality.
Gender disparities persist, with cultural norms and early marriage impacting girls’ education. Efforts to promote technical and vocational education and training (TVET) are growing, aiming to equip youth with skills for the job market. Regional cooperation and initiatives led by IGAD and international organizations are vital for enhancing access and quality in education, particularly in conflict-affected areas. Overall, increased investment and strategic reforms are essential for improving educational outcomes and fostering sustainable development in IGAD states.
