Knowledge Management and Capacity Development
Environmental degradation remains a threat to national development aspirations as well as sustainable development goals in the IGAD region. Global climate changes and human activities affecting natural resources and land use contribute to environmental degradation, which disrupts the traditional balance between people, their habitat and socioeconomic, political and cultural systems.
IGAD member countries are doing their bit to address environmental degradation challenges by establishing relevant enabling policies and institutional frameworks, among others. However, several challenges still undermine efforts to manage environmental and natural resources in the region sustainably. These include weak institutions and poor policy implementations, limited environmental data and awareness, limited technical and institutional capacities, poor coordination on the management of transboundary resources, and limited financial resources, among others.
IGAD CAEP, in coordination with member states and partners, works to breach the region's environmental protection knowledge management and capacity gaps by capitalising on existing systems and processes from the local communities, national, regional and international levels.
What We Do
- We partner with regional and international research institutions to undertake environment and natural resources-relevant research in all member states focusing on existing gaps, successes, challenges and opportunities and emerging issues.
- We co-produce user-friendly environmental management knowledge and products for sustainable environmental protection and conservation.
- We support member states and communities in leveraging innovation and technology to accelerate sustainable management of environmental and natural resources and build regional ecosystem resilience.
- We work with member states and partners to undertake capacity development training, workshops and seminars for member state institutions and communities on sustainable environmental management practices, climate change adaptation, Early Warning and Disaster Risk Management, among others.
